Ten Days to Take Stock: Lessons from the Jewish High Holidays

If you’re unfamiliar, Rosh Hashanah, which just passed, marks the Jewish New Year while next week’s Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, devoted to reflection and seeking forgiveness. The ten days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, known as the Days of Awe, have always held a special place in my heart. Jewish tradition calls for using this period to reflect on the year past and contemplate what lies ahead, hoping that we and our loved ones “will be inscribed in the book of life” for another year. For me, the power of the Jewish High Holidays is in the reminder that each year is a gift, not a given, and that our mortality gives urgency to how we live.

Whether or not you observe these holidays, there’s something powerful about setting aside time for this kind of reflection. As a financial advisor, I know that finances are so much more than numbers on a statement—they’re about security, generosity, and the legacy we leave behind. These ten days offer an opportunity to think about using your wealth meaningfully: perhaps making that charitable donation you’ve considered, supporting family members while you can witness their gratitude, or funding experiences that create lasting memories.

In such a divisive time, it’s especially important to pause and take stock of all the good we have going on—to celebrate our health, our relationships, our ability to make a positive impact.

May we all find ourselves inscribed in the book of life—not just for another year, but for a year where we use our resources and our time to live with greater purpose and connection.

Hebrew and English holiday greeting with a shofar, saying May you be inscribed in the Book of Life.
